We will keep you informed of our progress, but here is what you need to know now about the merger:

  • Continue banking as you do today.
While our companies are legally merged, you'll continue to bank at your local Sandy Spring branch until late 2025 when the two bank systems will combine. The branch or office signs will then change to Atlantic Union Bank, but you'll continue to see the same familiar faces that serve you now.

  • More Branches. More ATMs.
As an early benefit, you can immediately begin using Atlantic Union Bank ATMs with no fees or surcharges. With AUB’s expanded branch and ATM network, you will have access to your account across Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C and parts of North Carolina.

  • Expanded Banking Solutions.
AUB offers a broad array of products and services for individuals and businesses. Whether you need traditional banking solutions such as checking, mortgages and savings options or more complex solutions such as treasury management services, specialty business loans or wealth management and investment services, we’ve got you covered. When coupled with our caring and knowledgeable bankers and advisors, there’s almost nothing in banking we can’t help you with.

Our priority is to make this transition as seamless as possible, and we will continue to keep you informed over the coming months. We will be frequently communicating through both traditional mail and email to help you prepare for the system conversion. Please make sure your contact information, including your email, is up to date so we can provide you with any relevant updates. You can update your contact information through your online banking account or by notifying your local branch. If you have any feedback or questions along the way, please call AUB’s Customer Care Team at 800.990.4828, reach out to your local branch manager, advisor or relationship manager, or send your comments to MergerQuestions@AtlanticUnionBank.com. For more information, visit our website, or follow Atlantic Union Bank on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn.

Welcome! We look forward to serving you.

Atlantic Union Bank and Sandy Spring Bank Merger FAQs

  • The merger of Atlantic Union Bank (AUB) and Sandy Spring Bank (SSB) means an expanded area to serve our customers. For Sandy Spring Bank customers, this includes an added dense branch presence across Virginia and into parts of North Carolina. And for AUB’s customers, this now means access in Washington, D.C., as well as a much larger presence in Northern Virginia and Maryland.
  • By combining, we are enhancing our ability to offer you the products, digital technology and convenience of bigger banks, while maintaining the responsiveness, local market focus, strong relationships and great customer experience you know.
  • We will be expanding our network as the largest regional bank headquartered not only in Virginia, but also within the Mid-Atlantic region. With our growth, though, some things will never change – like our commitment to our customers, the communities we serve and our goal of making banking easier and more convenient.
This merger will foster growth in the communities we serve. As part of the merger announcement, we also committed to a 5-year, $9.5 billion Community Impact Plan to help strengthen economic growth and expand financial access. The plan includes funds committed to originate residential and community development lending, as well as grants and investments. Both Sandy Spring Bank and Atlantic Union Bank have been great partners to their local communities for over a hundred years, and that commitment to our customers and to each other will only be strengthened with this merger.
Ultimately yes, but not quite yet. Until the conversion is complete in late 2025, the branches operating under the Atlantic Union Bank name will use different systems than the Sandy Spring Bank branches. We will communicate details to you in advance of that conversion, so you’ll know when these branches can be used. Right now, though, you can use Atlantic Union Bank ATMs to withdraw funds without any fees or surcharges, but ATM deposits at AUB locations won’t be available until the core systems conversion.
Until we combine our bank systems, expected in late 2025, Sandy Spring Bank will continue to operate under the Sandy Spring Bank name (as a division of Atlantic Union Bank) and use its existing operating systems. Sandy Spring Bank customers will continue to use their same checks and debit cards and access online banking as they typically do. We will communicate more details in advance of the systems conversion. For Sandy Spring Trust and Wealth clients, you can continue to manage your investments as usual. We will notify you of any specific wealth account changes as the year moves forward.
AUB has completed several mergers and systems conversions successfully and is committed to making this a seamless transition. As we get closer to the systems conversion, we will be frequently communicating through traditional mail and email to help you prepare.

Helpful Tip – Please make sure your contact information, including your email, is up to date so we can provide you with any relevant updates. You can update your contact information through your online banking account or by notifying your local branch.

The standard deposit insurance coverage limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category.

For any insured deposit accounts, FDIC deposit insurance is combined for all your deposit accounts maintained at all branches of Atlantic Union Bank, including those branches operated under the “Sandy Spring Bank” trade name. If you maintained deposit accounts both at Atlantic Union Bank and Sandy Spring Bank prior to the banks’ merger, separate insurance of those accounts will continue for a six-month grace period ending October 1, 2025. Grace periods for CDs may vary, so please talk with a banker to understand your situation.

If you have balances above $250,000, our bankers can talk with you about the ways in which you can maximize your FDIC insurance coverage.

No, there will be no changes to existing loan terms, and you can continue to make payments as you do today.
While the two banks have legally merged, the rebranding will happen in late 2025 in conjunction with our systems conversions. Until then, Sandy Spring Bank branches will continue to have their signs and branding.
In addition to in-depth industry expertise, our team of bankers have a focus on relationship banking and being a trusted partner. Our business and commercial bankers live in the areas they serve, so they know the markets and can make local decisions with a strong understanding of clients and the communities. Visit AtlanticUnionBank.com to learn more about our business and commercial banking expertise.
There is minimal overlap between Sandy Spring Bank and Atlantic Union Bank locations, which is one of the benefits of this merger. Because of this, branch closures will be minimal and focused on select Northern Virginia locations where the proximity is close. We’ll let you know about any branch consolidations well in advance if they occur. Where there are branch closures, impacted employees will often transition to other nearby branches, so clients will continue to partner with the same people.
Atlantic Union Bank is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
Our priority is to make this transition as easy as possible, and we’ll be communicating with you throughout. If you do have an immediate question and would like to reach out, please call Atlantic Union Bank’s Customer Care Center at 800.990.4828, talk to your local branch manager, advisor or relationship manager, or email us at MergerQuestions@AtlanticUnionBank.com. We look forward to serving your banking needs now and into the future.
